Res-erection: half chub

The fin is on!

I’ve been working on the board intermittently over the last couple of weeks. I was putting off getting to the fin but I bit the bullet and put it on yesterday as I’m pretty much just down to the last hot coat application on the dings.

My personal assessment: not the best looking fin repair but it’ll work!

I had had to patch some glass on the fin when it was off the board but I didn’t clean it up super well. I figured that any exposed weave would just get soaked when I glassed it on to the board but there’s a fair amount of dusty looking parts.

That being said, only I will notice. And the board looks like it’s been through hell anyway so not a huge problem if the fin has a weird look too.

My only serious concern is whether I have enough glass to keep it on when I’m riding. I applied fin rope - prob about 25-30 strange of 6oz - and two full pieces of 6oz cloth on either side with a proper amount of tail to glass to the board. The fin ain’t going anywhere for sure but I just remember how much glass was on there before it came off and I think I’ve applied much less. Time will tell.

Waiting for the hot coat to dry now and then I’ll go to town cleaning it up and getting it flush. The nose dings are hot coated on one side now too so once it’s dried I’ll flip it and finish the last application of resin.

Then it’s clean up time!

Follow up:
The hot coat has pretty much cured and I noticed that there's a decent amount of flex in the fin. There's also a weird noise when you push and pull the fin. My assessment is that there's some delamination from the original damage under the new glass and that's what's moving a bit. My bad for not cleaning things up better under there but oh well. I left some cracked glass under there and there was a strange bit of dry cloth that I know is not stuck to the foam so I guess that's biting me in the ass now.

The fin will stay put and it'll stay dry but I think eventually, the glass might pull away from the foam the more stress it gets. If it does, I'll just clean it up properly and glass it again.

This board should be in the trash so I'm not that bothered about this hiccup.
